Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - A flood is inundating more than 100 hectares of rice field in Maros district, South Sulawesi, following heavy rains in the past week.
"Over the past week heavy rains continued to fall so rice plant aged two to three weeks is submerged by flood water," said a farmer at Turikale subdistrict, Maros district, on Sunday.
He said if the flood water did not recede in three days, he would replant rice seeds on the rice field. This meant that harvest time which was originally scheduled to take place at the end of March or early April would retreat.
"To replant rice seeds on the rice field farmers not only waste energy but also suffer material losses because they have to buy new seeds," he said. (S012)
